Colette Scherffius, beloved wife, mother, and grandmother, passed away February 1, 2026, at the age of 69. She passed away peacefully at her home in Desloge, surrounded by the warmth and love of her family. Born on October 9, 1956, in Crackers Neck, VA, Colette was the cherished daughter of the late Colonel and Barbara (Bryant) Swiney, Sr.
A devoted member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Nazareth in St. Louis, Colette embraced her faith and shared it with those around her. She possessed a remarkable gift for capturing life’s moments through writing and poetry, and her soul found joy in music and singing. Yet it was her role as a mother and grandmother that filled her heart with the greatest pride. Colette was a nurturing spirit, raising her children with love and care, and she extended that maternal warmth to all who knew her. She became a mother to many, embodying kindness and support in everything she did.
She was preceded in death by her parents; maternal grandparents, Paul and Anna Bryant; brothers, Billy Swiney and Timothy Swiney; sister, Hassel Swiney and one brother in-law, John Gleghorn, Sr.
Colette is survived by her loving husband of 53 years, Ralph William Scherffius; children, Josh Scherffius and wife Karah, Brandon Scherffius, Sam Scherffius, Marshall Scherffius and wife Amie, Ralph Scherffius and wife Lacey, Elizabeth Wilson and husband Cory; grandchildren, Joshua, Ryne, Gavin, Chase, Will, Shandon, Wade, Braydon, Cade, Marlee, Xavier, Jaxon, Calvin, Kingston, Wyatt, Olivia, Hadley and Gunner; seven great-grandchildren, Parker, Saylor, Jreu, Ericka, Sadie, Oaklynn and Waylon; siblings, Sheila Gleghorn, Colonel Swiney, Jr. and wife Judy; nieces and nephews, Barb Conway, Johnny Gleghorn, Jr., Colonel “Buddy” Swiney III, Timothy Swiney, Ronnie Scherffius, Shane Broglin, Jeri Bryan, Hallie Sabrsula; and special friend, Lynn Minor.
Visitation will be held at C.Z. Boyer and Son Funeral Home in Desloge, Friday, February 6, 2026, from 5:00 PM until 8:00 PM. The visitation will resume Saturday, February 7, 2026, from 9:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM. Pastor Bobby Upchurch will be officiating. Interment will follow at Leadwood Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society or M.A.D.D.
Colette’s light will forever shine in our hearts, reminding us of the importance of love, community, and the bonds that unite us. Her legacy will endure through the many lives she touched. As we say goodbye, we know she will continue to watch over us, her spirit dancing in the joy of the memories we hold dear.
