Gary (Doug) D. Bales

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Gary Douglas Bales, affectionately known as Doug, who peacefully left this world on Saturday, July 11, 2026, at the age of 78. Born on Friday, March 19, 1948, in Bonne Terre, Missouri.

Doug was a member of the Esther Methodist Church in Park Hills, and he was a devoted and active member of the Elvins Ionic Lodge No. 154, for many years, where he valued the principles of brotherhood, charity and service. He gave generously of his time, especially by assisting with Masonic funeral rites considering it a privilege to help honor and pay final respects to his fellow brothers. His dedication and commitment to the Masonic fraternity left a lasting impression on all who knew and served him alongside him. His faith and friendships formed the bedrock of his life, offering him comfort and companionship.

Gary was preceded in death by his parents; Alva and Mildred A. (Propst) Bales; his wife, Rhonda (Montgomery) Bales, sister, Patty Pecaut, and brother in-law’s, Charles Pecanty, Bob Davis.

Doug was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps, a commitment that defined his character and instilled in him a profound sense of duty. In addition to his military service, he dedicated over 30 years to his career as a Meter Reader with Union Electric, now Ameren UE, where he was known for his hard work and dedication. Doug was also a man of simple pleasures. He had a fondness for the beauty of nature, particularly watching the hummingbirds that frequented his yard. His love for animals was evident in his cherished companions, Murphy and Puller. A lover of Sci-Fi movies and an admirer of scientific inquiry, he often found joy in both fictional worlds and the wonders of the universe. Throughout his life, Doug enjoyed the small comforts—smoking grandpa's cigars in his younger years, savoring pork rinds with his Sprite beverage and relishing a morning ritual of iced coffee from Casey's. These moments of simple joy were a testament to his carefree spirit and enjoyment in life.

 Doug leaves behind his daughter, Jamie Barton and son-in-law Chris Barton, his son Jason Bales and daughter-in-law Jessica Bales; stepdaughter, Emily and husband Chris; seven grandchildren; his beloved great niece Emilee and husband Chad Clark, who provided compassionate care during his time of illness; he also leaves his sister Madonna Davis, brother Dick Bales, and sister-in-law Connie Bales; and several nieces and nephews. His legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the privilege to know him.

A graveside service is pending at Jefferson Barracks in St. Louis, Missouri, with full military honors. Pastor Joe Hayes will be officiating.

As we bid farewell to Doug, we remember him not only for his remarkable life but also for the love and laughter he brought to those around him. He will be deeply missed, but his spirit will remain a guiding light in our lives.
