Listen to Obituary

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Joe Earl Shunk, Sr., “The Barrel Man,” age 93, who died on Saturday, January 17, 2026. Joe was born on Thursday, August 11, 1932, in Graniteville, Missouri to the late Charles L. Shunk and Edith Pearl Benton.

Joe was drafted in the U.S. Army in 1953 and served during the Korean War, earning multiple medals, including the Korean Service Medal with one Bronze Service Star, the United Nations Service Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Meritorious Unit Commendation.

Following his military service, Joe was united in marriage to Dixie Jo (Wadlow) Shunk on July 27, 1955. Together, they raised two sons, Joe Shunk Jr. and Paul “Andy” Shunk. Joe and Dixie shared 64 years of marriage before Dixie’s passing in 2019.

Joe worked for the Hannah Mining Company in Iron Mountain until its closure, after which he transferred to Pilot Knob. There, he spent 30 years working as a mechanic before retiring when the mine closed in 1980.

In his younger years, Joe enjoyed hunting and fishing—not only as hobbies, but as ways to provide for his family. He never met a stranger and was known for his long conversations, warm connections, and genuine friendship. Joe also had a deep love for gospel music and especially enjoyed singing along to his favorite songs. He loved his family and telling stories of growing up and his stories of working in the mines.

Joe was preceded in death by his wife of 64 years, Dixie Jo Shunk; his two sons, Joe Shunk Jr. and Paul “Andy” Shunk; his parents, Charles Shunk and Edith Benton; his grandson, Christopher Joe Shunk; his three sisters, Dorothy Shunk, Edna Mae (Shunk) Harbison, and Lucille (Benton) Ruge; and his brother, Hue G. Shunk.

Joe is survived by his granddaughter, Jennifer and husband Michael Bachand of Ironton, Missouri. Also surviving are three great-grandchildren: Kylie Bachand and Devin Bachand and Dillion; three sisters: Ruth and husband Terry Effen, Vilot and husband Tom Pinkson and Doris and husband Edward Powell. A host of nieces, nephew, family and friends also survive.
