John F. Garland Jr.

With gratitude for a life well-lived and faith in God’s promises that we announce the passing of John F. Garland, Jr., who departed this earthly realm on July 30, 2026, at the age of 100. Born on May 13, 1926, in Paragould, Arkansas, John exemplified a life of service, dedication, and unwavering faith. John earned a Master's Degree in English and devoted much of his life to the noble callings of teaching and ministry. As a dedicated educator, he touched the lives of countless students, inspiring them with his passion for education and his steadfast commitment to their growth. Beyond the classroom, John served as a minister, offering wisdom, compassion, and spiritual guidance to many in his community. His influence reached far beyond the walls of schools and churches, living on in the hearts of all who had the privilege of knowing him. A proud World War II veteran of the United States Army, John served his country with honor, courage, and steadfast dedication. His time in the military reflected the deep sense of duty and commitment that defined his character throughout his life. Whether in service to his nation, his students, his congregation, or his family, John carried himself with humility, integrity, and a faithful heart, leaving behind a lasting example of service and devotion.

John is survived by his beloved daughter, Sandra Henry, and son-in-law, Drew Henry, who cherish the memories they shared. He was a proud grandfather to Brooke Henry - husband Ricardo “Rick” Costa - whose laughter and spirit brought him immense joy. He is also survived by his niece, Nancy Hackman, and great nephew, Jon Worth Treat; along with several other nieces and nephews, each of whom held a special place in his heart.

John was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Bernice (Skaggs) Garland; his parents John and Lennie Garland, Sr.; and one brother, Joe Garland.

The family will gather to honor John's remarkable life and legacy. A Celebration of Life will be held at on Saturday, August 29, 2026 from 2:00 pm until the time of service at 4:00pm, where we will remember the man whose kindness and wisdom enriched us all. Friends, family, and those who knew John are invited to join in this remembrance of a cherished life dedicated to serving others.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in John's memory to either Presbyterian Manor in Farmington, who cared lovingly for him for the past 15 years or to Missouri Baptist Children’s home, which holds a special place in all of our hearts.
