It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of John Pettus, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, brother, and friend, who left us on Saturday, October 11, 2025, at the age of 71. Born on Sunday, August 22, 1954, John made his home in Bonne Terre, Missouri, where he built a life rich with love, laughter, and cherished memories.
John was a proud veteran of the United States Army, whose dedication to service reflected his strong sense of duty and integrity. Following his military service, he worked as a union laborer and was a valued member of the Laborers’ Union, where he built not only structures, but also lifelong friendships grounded in respect and camaraderie.
A true outdoorsman, John found peace and joy in hunting and fishing, often sharing his love of nature with family and friends. His creativity shone through in his wood whittling, a craft that reflected his patience and appreciation for the simple beauty in life. John also had a lifelong passion for race cars, embracing the thrill and fellowship that came with the sport.
Above all, John was devoted to his family. He is survived by his loving wife, Judy Pettus, and their three children: Johnny (Miranda) Pettus, Julie (Timothy) Novotny, and Joanie (Mark) Smith. He was the proud grandfather of John “Dylan” Pettus, Chase (Shelbie) Carroll, Landon Carroll, Nora Smith, Kaylee Novotny, Jedediah Smith, Colton Jenkins, and Levi Jenkins, each of whom held a special place in his heart. He is also survived by his sister, Debbie Higgins, and brother, Edwin Pettus.
John’s loyal canine companion, Dora, was a constant source of comfort and joy, a reflection of his gentle and nurturing spirit.
Visitation celebrating John’s life will be held on Wednesday, October 15, 2025, at C.Z. Boyer & Son Funeral Home in Bonne Terre, from 12:00 PM until service time of 7:00 PM with Randy Murphy officiating. In lieu of flowers donations may be made in John’s honor to the Disabled Veterans Association.
Family and friends are invited to gather in remembrance, sharing stories and honoring a man whose kindness, humor, and love touched everyone he met. The service will be a time to reflect on his legacy, his service to country and community, and the countless memories he leaves behind.
John was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Norma Pettus, as well as his brother Jim Pettus and sister Carolyn Grebe.
Though John has departed from this world, his spirit, kindness, and zest for life will forever remain in the hearts of those who knew and loved him. He will be deeply missed and lovingly remembered always.
