Laurie "Gene" Markotay

Laurie Gene Markotay,74, of Festus, passed away, Thursday, November 13, 2025, at Mercy Hospital Jefferson in Crystal City Mo.

Born on Saturday, September 29,1951, in Ironton Mo. Gene had several jobs throughout his life. Gene spent his early years as a boat mechanic for One Stop Boat & Motor’s he was an over the road trucker for several years and retired as a dump truck owner /operator at Markotay’s Trucking Inc.

Gene’s favorite past time was watching tv in his recliner with his 3 dogs: OG, Pingyetta, and Grizzley. Feeding birds in his front yard, fishing and hunting when he was able. He enjoyed visits with his friend from high school Mike Reddick, who made sure he always had snacks, soda and someone to check on him when family couldn’t.

He is survived by his daughter Laurie (Shaun) Mercer of Festus/Imperial; his son Mark (Shannon) Markotay of Hillsboro; Four grandchildren: Eoin Markotay, Evanna Watson, Josiah and Tessa Markotay; sister Vicki Markotay of Festus; Sister in laws Ruth (Steve) Ash of Festus, Betty (Ronnie) Bollinger of Desoto, brother-in-law Jimmy (Robin) Govro of Festus. Several nieces and nephews; along with family members; Lisa (David) Cross of Festus Gary (Linda) Theodoro of Desoto.

He is preceded in death by his loving wife of 40 years, Judi (Govro) Markotay; mother, Wilma (Nall) Theodoro; and his father, Wallace Gene Markotay.

He was a fighter and will be missed. Services will be held at a later date. Arrangements are under the direction of C.Z. Boyer Funeral Home.
