It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Leonard Paul Stewart, who departed this world on Monday, May 11, 2026, at the age of 94. He was born on Wednesday, October 7, 1931, in Bonne Terre, to the late Charles Stewart and Grace Stewart-Barnes. Leonard lived a life filled with music, compassion, and dedication to others.
In addition to his parents, Leonard was preceded in death by his wife, Josephine (Schembre) Stewart; stepdad, George Barnes; brothers, Donald, Oland and Elwood Stewart; half-brother, Thomas who was killed in World War II.
Leonard’s journey took him through various roles, including a valued position at McDonnell Douglas and serving as an electrician for the American Red Cross. In this capacity, he traveled the nation to offer aid during disasters, embodying a spirit of generosity and service that touched many lives.
In his early twenties, Leonard pursued a career in music. He was an accomplished guitar player specializing in Blues and Rock music. He performed along with country stars Ernest Tubb, Web Pierce and was lead guitarist for Bobby Brown and the Curios. After moving to St. Louis, he was well known in the many clubs and at one point performed for and played with Chuck Berry and Ike and Tina Turner.
Beyond his musical endeavors, Leonard found fulfillment in his love for cars, often spending his free time painting and repairing vehicles. His enthusiasm was infectious, and he could often be found sharing stories and tips with fellow car enthusiasts.
Leonard is survived by his cherished daughter, Kimberly Granger and husband Jim; step-daughters, Angela Hopewell, Anita Busch and Tina Neu; grandchildren, Blake (Chelsy) Kaufmann and Paige (Jacob) Almeter; great-grandchildren, Elijah, Amelia and two more precious ones due later this year; brother, Gerald (Paulette) Stewart; nephews, Paul Stewart and Jerry Stewart; great nephew, Miles Stewart; great niece, Mary Stewart along with other friends and family.
Graveside service will be held 11:30 AM, Monday, May 18, 2026, at Bonne Terre Cemetery in Bonne Terre with Pastor Rocky Good officiating. Arrangements under the direction of C. Z. Boyer & Son Funeral Home in Bonne Terre.
