Russell Jay Payne, 61, of Bonne Terre, passed away Friday, May 1, 2026, at home with his loved ones near his side. He was born, September 22, 1964, in Bonne Terre to the late Doyle and Regenia (Albert) Payne.
As Russell grew up, he always enjoyed riding and racing. He would often be found in Lesterville riding the trails and river in his Bronco. He used to be seen driving the oval dirt track at the St. Francois County Raceway in Farmington.
Russell spent his career on the road, putting in long hours behind the wheel with a strong work ethic and a commitment to providing for his family. His work through Teamsters Local 682 was a point of pride, reflecting his belief in hard work, loyalty, and standing shoulder-to-shoulder with others.
When he wasn’t driving, he loved hunting and took pride in being an at-home mechanic, always tinkering, fixing, and figuring out how things worked. He also had a sharp eye for a good deal and a knack for making sure nothing went to waste. Whether it was tools, parts, or everyday items, he enjoyed the thrill of the find and the satisfaction of getting the most for his money.
He was also a lifelong fan of Westerns and crime shows, especially those starring John Wayne. Sports played a meaningful role in Russell’s life as well. He spent years playing softball and later gave back to the game by coaching, sharing his knowledge and love of the sport with others.
Russell is survived by his loving wife, Cathy (Weems) Payne; his daughters, Samantha Payne, Erica Clark her husband, Corey; his adoring granddaughter,
Lucie Clark; sister, Vickie Tiefenauer; her husband, Toofer. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Friday, May 29, 2026, from 4:00 PM to 10:00 PM at the Bonne Terre Park Community Center.
Arrangements are under the direction of C.Z. Boyer Funeral Home in Bonne Terre.
