Ruth Leatha (Hasse) Hughes, 89, passed from this life into the arms her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, at the home of her daughter, LeaDonna, on December 8, 2014 in Farmington, Missouri. She was born on November 15, 1925 in St. James, Missouri, daughter of the late Alvin and Ada Jane (Paige) Hasse of Flat River (now Park Hills), Missouri. She married Virgil Willis Hughes, Sr. at the home of her parents on August 27, 1942, a marriage that celebrated its 72nd year this past summer. Ruth inherited a talent for arts and craft. She was a seamstress, quilter, singer, organizer, and homemaker. Ruth designed and made many of the clothes worn by her family that included suits and wedding dresses. Her award winning quilts are prized for color combination, intricate design, delicate embroidery and detailed stitching. In early years Ruth accepted Christ as Savior which was beginning of a life-long service to the church. She wrote and directed Christmas programs, participated in fund raisers, directed Vacation Bible School, was a member of the church choir, sung solos, and directed the choir in special services. Typically there was a song bursting from her heart while engaged in household chores. Ruth was active in her children's scholastic program. She was the President of the Leadwood High School Parents of 1963-1964. She encouraged her children and grandchildren to make the most of opportunity and understood the value of education. She worked outside the home as her children pursued education and graduated with bachelors, masters, and specialist degrees. For a number of years Ruth was an employee for Trimfoot Shoe Company in Farmington. She was also the city clerk of Leadwood. In 2012 the city of Leadwood honored Virgil and Ruth by declaring the couple as Grand Marshals for the annual city parade. They were residents of the city from August, 1955 to December, 2012. For Ruth, to live is Christ and to die is gain. Her faith in Christ set the example for her children and grandchildren to embrace, and we know that someday we will see her again. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents (Alvin and Ada Jane Hasse of Flat River, Missouri), two brothers (Warren of Farmington, Missouri and Kenneth in infancy), four sisters (Alice of St. Louis, Hazel of Farmington, Sharon of Park Hills, and Priscilla of Desloge). She is survived by husband, Virgil, two sons (Virgil, Jr. "Rusty" (Pauline) of Allen, TX and Darrell Ray (Marcella) of Roswell, GA), two daughters (LeaDonna Yvonne Stam (Sonny) of Farmington and Annetta Ruth Crawford (Clark) of Ooltewah, TN.
