Listen to Obituary

Verna Ruth Smith, a beloved pillar of her family and community, passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at the age of 94. Born on Monday, July 6, 1931, Verna lived a life marked by her kindness, devotion, and vibrant spirit in Columbia, Missouri.

Verna was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church in Farmington, where her faith was the cornerstone of her existence. She embraced each day with love, never knowing a stranger, and found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Her passion for crocheting and cross-stitching not only filled her home with beautiful creations but also reflected her nurturing nature, as she often gifted her handmade items to family and friends.

For over 40 years, Sunday was not just a day of the week for Verna; it was a time for family gatherings filled with laughter, delicious home-cooked meals, and cherished memories. Her home was a haven, welcoming countless family members who would enjoy her hospitality and warmth.

A devoted sports fan, Verna passionately cheered for the St. Louis Cardinals and the Kansas City Chiefs, finding joy in the excitement of the game, especially when her favorite player, Patrick Mahomes, took to the field. She also relished quiet moments at home, enjoying her favorite television shows.

Verna's family was the heart of her life. She is survived by her cherished five grandchildren; Stacy Smith Goforth and husband David, Kelly McCord Harper and husband Jarad, Christy McCord England, and husband Aaron, Jeremy Smith, Kayce McCord Porterfield and husband Craig, and Annie Springer Pigg and husband Jerrod, each holding a special place in her heart. Additionally, her legacy continues through her sixteen great-grandchildren and twelve great-great-grandchildren, with the joyous news of two more on the way in September and November 2026, along with one son in-law Greg McCord and wife Deanna and several nieces and nephews.

Verna was preceded in death by her parents, Paul William Glendone Rentfro and Ola Mae "Schrum" Rentfro Gilliam; her devoted husband, Robert "Dale" Smith; two children, son Kerry (Carla) Smith and daughter Karen Smith McCord; two great-grandsons, David Jr. and Dustin Goforth; and her brother, Vernon (Peggy) Rentfro.
